Travel Journal

August 2005

Our Travel Journal for August is going to be quite short since we really haven’t much to report.  With a minor exception we spent the entire month in Fort Wayne parked in Michael’s driveway.  We spent most of the time lightening our load by unloading everything, contemplating every article before re-packing or discarding it.  The last several months have shown that we don’t need many of the things that we originally considered to be absolutely necessary.  We were also the summertime babysitters for Katja and Keith but that ended on August 22d when school began.

On August 11th we took a short trip with the kids to a campground on a lake north of Fort Wayne and west of Angola, Indiana.  On the way to the campground we made a detour to Elkhart where we bought a very practical table for the RV because the antique trunk that we had been using as a coffee table was just too heavy and it had to be put in storage.

Of course we also had to make a short visit to Crossroads, our RV manufacturer, to have a window replaced.  We spent the night in front of the factory in the parking lot.  Of course the kids found it to be a real adventure.  The next morning the window was replaced and we drove on to the lake.  A row boat ride, swimming and a visit to the playground filled the afternoon hours.  In the evening Chuck took the kids to the campground movie in an old barn where popcorn and drinks were free.  Renée waited for Michael to arrive.  When Chuck and the kids came back, Michael was there, had eaten his supper of grilled bratwurst and had his fishing lines already in the water.

The following morning Michael was up at 5 AM to try his luck at catching our planned evening meal.  The plans were changed that evening since all that he caught was much too small to keep.  In the afternoon Michael rented a row boat and rowed across the lake and through a waterway to a neighboring lake.  On the way back he encountered a sudden thunderstorm.  It continued to rain for several hours, changing our plans for an evening camp fire.  We waited in the RV for the rain to stop.  We looked outside and saw that we were sitting in about 15-18 inches of water and the rain kept coming.  Chuck sat the grill on top of the picnic table under the awning and eventually was able to grill the corn-on-the-cob and steaks.  Salad and side dishes were cooked inside.  Supper was quite late and it tasted good!

Overnight the rain stopped and we were able pack up and head back to Fort Wayne in the afternoon.

To be continued in September …………………..
